C&P from fingolfin:

"I think most people have a misconstrued idea of what geology is

I often get a blank stare followed by “why?” or “what do you do with that?” in a superior tone when I tell someone I’m studying geology. This is what I want to say to them, but usually refrain from doing so.

Do you drive or ride in an automobile? A geologist found that petroleum. Even if your car is electric, a geologist was still probably involved in the process, with coal-fired power plants or other fossil fuel based electricity generation plants being a huge source of power. If your electricity came from hydro, again, a geologist was involved in making sure that the site was suitable for a dam. Do you live in an area prone to earthquakes, near a volcano, a dam, a river, in a city with skyscrapers and bridges etc? You can bet there is a geologist hard at work somewhere to ensure your safety. Is your home heated by natural gas? Do you wear diamonds or other gemstones? Does your water come from a well? Do you fly on airplanes? I think you get the idea."

Haters gonna hate, but goddamn, it's still really irritating when I get funny looks after telling someone what my major is. Have a little respect for other people, sheesh.
